MY SPOUSE IS TRAVELING

When your spouse leaves for work, life at home doesn’t pause.

You may be carrying the routines, responsibilities, parenting, decisions, and ordinary moments of family life while also trying to stay connected to someone who isn’t physically there.

THE SPOUSE AT HOME

Being the one who stays can carry a weight that is hard to explain.

When your spouse travels, the responsibilities they normally help carry do not disappear. Dinner still needs made. Kids still need cared for. Appointments still happen. Things still break. Decisions still have to be made.

And underneath all of that can be another kind of weight: missing your spouse while also feeling frustrated with them, wanting them home while knowing they may not have a choice about leaving.

You can love your spouse deeply and still admit that this season is hard.

WHAT THIS SEASON CAN CREATE

Some pressures are easy to see. Others build quietly.

Recognizing what you’re carrying can make it easier to communicate it before exhaustion turns into resentment.

🧺

More on your shoulders

Responsibilities that normally belong to two people can suddenly become yours alone, even if only temporarily.

🧠

The mental load

It is not only doing more. It is remembering schedules, anticipating needs, making decisions, and keeping the household moving.

💬

Feeling unseen

Your spouse may hear what happened during the day without fully understanding how much energy it took to carry it.

👨‍👩‍👧

Parenting without your teammate

Bedtime, discipline, school, appointments, and emotional needs can feel very different when one parent is physically absent.

❤️

Missing your spouse

Loneliness can exist alongside frustration. Sometimes the person you most want comfort from is also the person whose absence is making life harder.

Adjusting when they return

You may have found a rhythm while they were gone. Reintroducing another person into that rhythm can be an adjustment too.

ONE IMPORTANT REMINDER

You do not have to prove that your side is harder for your experience to matter.

One of the easiest patterns for work-travel couples to fall into is comparing burdens. The traveler explains the exhausting trip. The spouse at home explains the exhausting week. Before long, both people are defending why they deserve more understanding.

A healthier question is not “Who had it harder?” but “What did this season cost you, and how can I understand that better?”

REMEMBER

You are still married to a teammate, even when it sometimes feels like you’re doing life alone.

Distance may temporarily change who carries what, but it should not erase shared responsibility, emotional presence, or the sense that you are facing this season together.
